ROOFTOP GARDENING: THE CHALLENGES YOU NEED TO TAKE

When you just love green, you are ready for any challenges.

Gardening is the slowest of the performing arts, as stated by Mac Griswold. It does not show an instant result like when you paint a masterpiece or like when you capture a great photograph. It needs time, perhaps years, to fully see the outcome.

Gardening also tends to be demanding since you need a space to plant something. But who says you need an extra land for that? You can, as a matter of fact, use the extra space you have.

A rooftop garden is common especially to people living in the city, where no extra land is available. City people who have the green thumbs enjoy the challenge of growing grasses and shrubs on the concrete rooftop. It may sound tedious, but growing it is all worth it-- although you need to be mentally and physically ready for the challenges it entails. Here are some of them.

THE WEATHER IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT

Growing plants on the rooftop means that they are exposed to the sun and strong wind more often. In some cases, your rooftop’s amount of sunlight may be blocked by other high rise buildings, which means less sunlight for your plant. Whatever the case, the challenge is to choose the right plant for this kind of environment.

ROOF LOAD CAPACITY AND CONDITION

Most engineers construct houses and apartments without considering that some people want to have rooftop gardens. That means, your rooftop may not be up for the challenge of growing plants. You better have it checked first to see how much it can handle. You may consider getting an engineer especially when it comes to setting up the soil for rooftop planting. You will also need to plan the proper drainage system to avoid damage to your roof.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLANT

The greatest challenge on having the rooftop garden is choosing the right vegetation.  The kind of plant you can have depends on the soil you have prepared. You need to choose plants with shallow roots and heat-resistance. You can try Kentucky Bluegrass since it does not require much attention. If you wish to avoid mowing grasses more often, you are opt to choose from the artificial grasses. It can give you the beautiful sight without having to bring out the zero turn radius mower all the time.

Rooftop gardening is harder than traditional gardening. You need to consider a lot of factors, from the soil to the plants. But once everything is in place, it gives wonders to your home. From the bird’s eyeview, it is a green, green grass of home.
